Hey there!

5 04 2008

This is my first post! Just to get started, I’ll let you know what I’ll be talking about here. A couple of months ago my grade was told to conduct a personal project that addressed a specific topic we were interested in. Naturally, I chose optical illusions so from now on this will be my outlet to discuss specific optical illusions and write about how and why your brain gets tricked. Since this is my first post I’ll start off with a short and simple Illusion that I made myself.

Photobucket

Try reading the words above quickly (reading aloud can help). After doing so, read the words again. Do you notice anything different?

*Explanation*

Naturally our brain tends to skim through words to get the main meaning of a text. When I first came across an illusion like this one, I didn’t find anything wrong with the sentence. After reading the sentence a couple of times though, I was surprised to see that some of the words were repeated. In the illusion I made above, there are duplicates of the words “as” and “a” but when skimming or reading through the sentence quickly, many people fail to notice the extra addition of words.

This illusion is an example of how or brain gathers and interprets information. It also shows how we can skip information and words unconsciously.

Thats all for now,

-Amanda

ps. don’t forget to leave comments and suggestions!

I, like many people probably, failed to notice the duplicate words. It’s interesting because after it’s pointed out, the difference seems so obvious and it seems like the error could have been picked up rather easily. Great topic though. =]

Well the first time I read it I fell for it; but then I remembered the same type of illusion from a physics textbook and found the duplicate words. Nice job with teh photo editing =D

Wow that completely startled me. I was one of the people who failed to see the repitition. I always wondered as to why my mind does this and its nice to know I’m not the only one out there who did not figure this out. When I was informed of the error, I felt startled because it seemed so easy to pick up.

Great Post! I hope to see a lot more of these in the future.

Knowing that this was an optical illusion, I tried to read the sentence carefully, scanning for errors. I picked up on the major flaws in the sentence- sheep don’t have skin, but fleece- but failed to pay an attention to the articles in the sentence. A lot of people have gotten used to skimming over the material that they read, especially since tests like the SATs require you to read passages quickly. However, this results in a lack of attention and a growing inability to pick up on rather obvious errors.

thanks for the comments guys! It’s interesting to see how easy it is to get fooled, and how obvious mistakes seem after realizing them.

That was a good optical illusion. It is also a very common one, I didn’t exactly know why I always kept falling for it. Thanks :) I can’t wait for more :)

had me fooled at first but i knew something had to be wrong, i think it all relates that if you are aware that something is definitely wrong, you’ll find it

Yeah, I know what you mean. When you hear the word “illusion” you know something will be “wrong” or skewed.

This is actually pretty good; It didn’t get me because naturally as a copy editor I analyze everything, so the first things I noticed were the grammatical mistake(s).
However, considering the amount of people that you got, it worked well. Keep working at it!

Also, the background texture is important to give it an authentic feel, so good job on that.

I can’t believe I fell for it
I didn’t even catch it when I reread, I only noticed the errors after you stated it.

Wow. almost got me there. this is an intresting concept, and i think you should try testing it out on people in a real life situation.
